Lakeland School Corporation is beginning a new and exciting initiative focused on preparing all of our students for rewarding careers and life success. Research and business have shown us that our students will need 21st century skills in addition to core class knowledge to be successful in our new economy.
Starting in the fall of 2010, 9th and 10th grade students will be immersed in a project based learning model that allows them to learn core academics and 21st century skills through authentic, relevant projects. As the students work in groups to complete real-world problems they will acquire 21st century skills such as collaboration, critical thinking, written and oral communication, technology literacy, citizenship and ethics, as well as career preparation. As these students become juniors and seniors, they will have the opportunity to take both project-based and traditional classes, including classes for college credit in the career areas in which they are interested. They will also learn ways to market their own talents in our new global world.
As students develop these skills through high school, they will explore their career interests before going on to the world of work, or away to a university or trade school. Indiana is placing a new emphasis on students exploring careers during high school, so parents and students can make good choices leading into the students' post high school life.
