FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
- WHAT IS THE SUPERINTENDENT AUTHORIZED TO DO IN DEALING WITH PERIODS OF INCLEMENT WEATHER?
- Close all of the schools if conditions warrant such actions.
- Delay the opening of school.
- Dismiss the school early under certain carefully monitored conditions.
- WHAT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE PARENT WHEN ANY PART OF THE INCLEMENT WEATHER PLAN IS IN EFFECT?
The parent is the final judge of whether his/her child will be in attendance when there is a delayed opening or when certain bus routes cannot be used at all. Under these conditions schools will be in session and the parent(s) must use their best judgment in determining whether their child will attend school.
In cases of a delayed opening of school, parents should make arrangements to have children cared for until buses do run. Parents must also realize that if school officials feel that it is not possible to open school, even after a delay, all schools will be closed. Provisions must be made by the parent(s) to have children taken care of if this should happen.
- HOW WILL LAKELAND SCHOOL CORPORATION DEAL WITH A STUDENT WHO IS ABSENT ON A DAY WHEN THE OPENING HAS BEEN DELAYED?
The student will be counted absent for student accounting purposes. However, the absence will be treated as an excused absence and the student will be permitted to make up work missed, provided the school is contacted by the parent or guardian.
- WILL MORNING KINDERGARTEN CLASSES BE HELD IN THE EVENT THE DELAYED OPENING IS USED?
Yes. Morning kindergarten will be held in the event there is a delay.
- HOW WILL SPECIAL EDUCATION TRANSPORTATION BE HANDLED?
Should Lakeland, Prairie Heights, or Westview be delayed or cancelled, Northeast Indiana Special Education Cooperative buses serving LaGrange County Cooperative programs will delay or cancel according to the district implementing the inclement weather information.
Buses serving more than one county will follow the inclement weather information of the Northeast Indiana Special Education Cooperative. (Co-op buses will not run in a district where school has been cancelled.)
